In June 2023, the Board of Education voted to move forward with the planning process necessary to build an addition at Churchill School that will provide space to offer full-day kindergarten to District 41 students. The addition will include 12 classrooms and will serve all full-day kindergarten students across the district. Families will still have the option to choose half day kindergarten. This work has been ongoing for the past 16 years through conversations, committees, and studies on this topic. The timing of this project is significant as the Governor signed a bill that will require school districts to offer full-day kindergarten by the 2027-28 school year. The district will continue to provide information about the planning process with regular reports to the Board of Education and the community in the coming months.

Representatives from Wight & Co. presented an update about the Full-Day Kindergarten Center addition project at Churchill Elementary School at the Board of Education meeting on January 8, 2024. The outdoor site plan was presented including the building addition, parking lot, bus lane and car drop off lane, entrance from Bloomingdale Road, reading garden, and new playgrounds. The team also presented the indoor plan design for the two story addition with 12 classrooms, multipurpose room for indoor play, dining area, flex space, and office area. They also shared milestone dates and the projected opening of the center in August 2025. The team is currently in the permitting and zoning phase of the process.

At a Board of Education meeting Brad Paulson and Craig Siepka from Wight & Co. presented an overview of the process up to now and next steps related to building space to provide full-day kindergarten. They shared the three approaches to achieving space for full-day kindergarten that have been presented at previous Board meetings. The Board decision was to move forward with Approach 1. Approach 1 includes an addition on Churchill School to provide full-day kindergarten for students across the district. Board members asked questions and engaged in conversation about program features and building specifics.
