On Monday, Sept. 12, Glen Ellyn School District 41 will hold a public meeting to review engineering work that will help determine the suitability of two potential building sites. The meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. at Hadley Junior High School, 240 Hawthorne Blvd., Glen Ellyn. Superintendent Dr. Jack Barshinger emphasizes that the site review is part of the long-range space planning process and that no decisions have been made. “We have a school’s worth of students in portables, and we are looking at the possibility of building a new school in the future. However, it’s important to know that we have made no decisions about building a school. The district is still collecting data,” he says. More information on the district’s space planning process can be found on the D41 Facilities website.
At the Sept. 12 meeting, FGM Architects will present the results of preliminary site engineering work such as soil boring and storm water studies, work that was conducted at the two sites the district owns: the open space on the Hadley Junior High School campus, and the Spalding Site. Hadley is located on the northeast corner of Hawthorne Blvd. and Glencoe St. on the Glen Ellyn-Wheaton boundary. Spalding is a vacant parcel north of St. Charles Rd. and east of Main St., between First and Second streets on Forest Ave.
The district has notified some homeowners adjacent to the Spalding site that it may have an interest in acquiring their properties, should the district build there in the future. “Again, no decisions have been made,” says Barshinger. “We felt that letting the homeowners know early that we might have an interest was the right thing to do. We wanted them to hear about it directly from us, and not at a public meeting or through rumors. We have made no offers and have taken no steps toward acquiring land. We are very sensitive to the concerns of the residents, but our first job is to plan for the future of our students.
In its efforts to find a suitable site, the district has looked at the former Omni site on Bloomingdale Rd. and North Ave. in the northeast part of the district. Also, it has worked with the Glen Ellyn Park District to see if the two bodies could collaborate on mutual needs, specifically at the Main St. Recreation Center site and Ackerman Park, but nothing discussed so far has proved satisfactory. The Board of Education has said it hopes that such a collaboration could work out for the benefit of students and taxpayers.
