Ben Franklin students support cancer research with a lemonade legacy
Posted Oct. 12

"Ben Franklin first grade students in Casey DePaepe-Douglas's class are participating in a philanthropy called, "Alex's Lemonade Stands" to benefit pediatric cancer research started by a little girl named Alex Scott who was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a childhood cancer, in Jan. of 1997. She died in 2004, having fought her cancer for seven years, leaving a legacy of courage and a successful nationwide fundraising campaign for childhood cancer. "My students and I will continue that legacy by selling lemonade at school events and meetings, sending the proceeds to the Alex Scott Foundation. I want to show my students that young people can truly make a difference like Alex did," says DePaepe-Douglas.

After each stand, the students will attend to the business end of fundraising, using their math skills to count and graph the proceeds. The first stand raised $155 and a second is planned for Oct. 13, 6:30-8:30 p.m. in conjunction with Benjamin Franklin Literacy Night.
